Emily Carr Library
A new library at Uptown made for the modern era.
In collaboration with Wensley Architecture, we built VPL’s Emily Carr library branch to reflect the changing services of public libraries in today’s technological environment. Bold, primary-coloured drywall ceiling clouds and drop pendant lighting were added to create visual interest and to balance the multi-colour stimuli introduced by the books. Bookshelves were placed strategically to create zones—seating areas, children’s section and computer stations—in this open-concept space. A special attribute of this project is the adjoining outdoor reading garden for public enjoyment. Particular design consideration and construction also took place in order to integrate a new automatic book-sorting machine into the exterior entryway and interior vestibule for public interaction and viewing.
